In 2010, the Metropolitan Municipality of Gaziantep (MMP), supported by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the French Agency of Environment and Energy Management (ADEME) implemented a pilot-project consisting in preparing a Territorial Climate Plan (TCP) based on the methodology of the ADEME.
By developping a Climate Action Plan, Gaziantep has proved to be a pionneer in the field of sustainable urban policy in Turkey.
A climate action plan aims at analysing and assessing the current situation of a municipality, being aware of the threats and opportunities that may arise in the near future and proactively taking action in favour of climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Actions on transport
The existing railway lines are now used by citizens who work in the industrial zone to commute to their work place. At the station you can also shift to the tramway, the line of which was build with upgraded recycled materials, for a very low total cost of €4M/km.
50 CNG-buses were purchased with ERBD loans and a bicycle road is planned to be build in the city center.
Actions on housing
Over the past 8 years, Gaziantep renovated more than 1,500 buildings.
The municipality plans to provide grants for energy retrofitting in the housing sector, to create an energy info point and to replace coal by gas in the housing and municipal services sectors.

In 2014, Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality introduced a new eco-city project. It has been planning to create a new city, 11 kilometers far from the district, in an area of 3,200 hectares. The idea is to build a city that can accommodate 200,000 people and where all the buildings, public and private, would be heated by burning up pistachio shells, unused until now. The purpose is thus to take into account the natural resources of the region.
İt’s a French company, BURGEAP, who has been leading the feasibility studies, and that should achieve the project if results are satisfactory.
Beforehand, a pilot project should be set up, on 55 hectares.

Gaziantep being the main place of pistachio production in Turkey, Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality wants to create a park around the pistachio showing step by step its specificities. In this park, many attractions are planned as a museum of pistachio, a tourist information centre and also other activities.

A Pistachio research station directed by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock has been set up since years. This station provides teaching on the subject to adults or professionals of the food sector, to farmers, as well as work placement for university students.
“Bearing the distinction of being the first structure to have the “PassivHaus” certificate in Turkey and as a candidate of the “LEED Platinium certificate”, the Gaziantep Ecological Buildingwas built on the premises of the Atatürk Culture Park by means of a joint undertaking by Gaziantep University and the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality.
As a recipient of İpekyolu Development Agency grant, Ecological Building which functions as a Human Resources Centre where renewable energy technologies are introduced.(...)”

The Municipality of Pamukkale (Denizli) held in December 2014 a local food cooking contest. 21 disabled people and their escorts, from seven different regions of Turkey have competed for the prize of best regional dish. The participants had 50 minutes to compose their dish. Participants of Gaziantep, by choosing to present a "Şiveydiz" (traditional dish of Gaziantep) arrived 2nd in the contest.
In 2015, in the framework of Gaziantep University, the University of Gaziantep signed a protocol of cooperation with the Metropolitan Municipality of Gaziantep concerning all the departments of the University, going from Archaeology to Gastronomy. The Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, Mrs Fatma Şahin and the headmaster of the University of Gaziantep (GAÜN) confirmed a protocol implying the university and the municipality with projects aiming at the development of cooperation in all the districts of the city.
