13.06.2017. Gaziantep Municipality will be producing its own electricity :Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Fatma Şahin has started the project to produce and use solar energy, wind energy and later on biogas energy.
The Lady Mayor gave a press release stating that they will create this system for the first time in Turkey. “The railroad systems are consuming a great amount of electricity.” Şahin said. “We will be using the electricity produced by the solar energy, wind energy and biogas energy panels with the facilities being connected to the municipality. With this system we will be able to cut down 60 percent of the costs spent on electricity. The municipality will be then producing its own power” she stated.
Şahin proceeded with stating that biogas is a renewable source of energy and has a very broad future in Turkey: “In Germany, near 13 percent of housing needs are produced from biogas. In Germany, the total biogas production is equivalent to 2.5 power stations. Biogas is electricity generated from animal waste without any other substance. The biogas energy system is still very new in Turkey and we are working together with some biogas corporations. The biogas sector is considered very versatile but this particular sector in Turkey is very open-front. For the first time in Turkey a biogas plant will be established with the work of the municipality and the public sector.”
Fertilizers will be given to farmers for free
After the biogas is produced the left over fertilizers will be provided for free. The plant would produce solid and liquid fertilizer after it produced electricity. Mrs Şahin proceeded by stating that the fertilizers will be used by the farmers free of charge until the farmers get used to using liquefied fertilizers due to the fact that farmers use solid ones for years. It is proven that liquefied fertilizers are more efficient. By giving out the fertilizers for free we will be introducing out the project and the farmers will be more familiar with the new type of fertilizer. Mrs Şahin then kindly stated that after the free trial period passes there will be a charge for the fertilizers due it being used for commercial purposes.
“Both non-renewable and renewable energy sources are very important for us she then stated, we were able to reach 1MW with solar power and were still in a working process with wind energy and now we are taking a major step in producing biogas. We were able to receive our approvals from Ankara and now we are able to use the three types of renewable energy. Our main aims are to create a wider awareness range with the public and with private sectors; at the same time, this project is considered a “social responsibility” project. We do realize that energy production is very important but we do want to pass down this energy source to the private sectors as well.”

13 million TL were invested
Mrs Şahin stated that the private sector should also start using biogas resources in order to use animal produced wastes and cut down the use of non-renewable energy and further explained: “With this project we are able to fully recycle. Animal produced wastes are considered natural fertilizers but in order to be used they need to go through a process. We will be providing the needed processes at our facility. The chicken waste is a very serious problem because the waste adds to the environmental pollution and with the facilities we will be able to solve the issues. We use close to 40 percent of the animal produced waste in the regions where we built the facilities. There is still a 60 percent gap and the private sector needs to be aware of this so we are able to use the 100 percent of the animal produced waste.”

Fatma Şahin proceeded to provide us with more information about the facilities and said “We are planning on ending our construction in August next year and after that we will have a few months of trial period and after that we will start charging the energy.”

The electricity produced will be used in the railroad system

Before starting the project Fatma Sahin stated that they had negotiated with the farmers and already signed an agreement to meet the demands for the raw materials needed. “Before this project started, we went to individual farms, we talked with our farmers and signed a contract and went over the protocol with each other. We wouldn’t have been able to proceed on the project without guaranteeing the raw material. The pre-feasibility process took a long time; we had to work on it for a year. We ended up collecting all the animal produced wastes, sent them to tests, and got information about the net weight and the wet weight and the possible methane gas that will be produced.”

Mrs Şahin stated that this project should be an example for all municipalities in Turkey and emphasized on the fact that the produced energy can and will be used for the municipality itself. “The railroad system has a serious effect on the electricity consumption. With this new project we will be able to decrease the amount of electricity used by 60 percent. The municipality will be producing its own energy”. Noting on that corn production should be emphasized on, she added: “It’s my greatest wish to direct the farmers in to corn production. I will be making a big contribution when I give them the farming fertilizers. Then in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, we can turn the corn seeds in to a new project”

26.05.2017. Solar energy water project run by Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Agricultural Services Department has taken a new interest in to the investment projects for the local farmers. The municipality is working on to raise to efficiency of the animal based produced products. : The “Grass-feed Solar Energized Animal Drinking Water Plant” costs between 80 and 100 thousand liras and has already made 5 facilities in Yavuzeli district. The village of Suleymanbasi is the last which received the facility. Ibrahim Yılmaz whom is the Head of the Department of Agricultural Services has met with the farmers for the opening ceremony of the plant and was present for the watering of small animals.
Yılmaz stated that the projects in action are run by the Lady Mayor of the Metropolitan Municipally Fatma Şahin. Mr Yılmaz stated that they used water and mostly solar energy whilst; they were doing water drillings at places where the small farm animals and livestock are the main concentration for the source of income. “Here today we have drilled down 60 meters long to dive down with professional divers to bring the water to the surface in to the storage. About 2 thousand 500 to 3 thousand small farm animals are now benefiting from these facilities and 5 different neighbouring villages will be using the water from these facilities” he stated.
Mr Yılmaz sayid that if the livestock is not feeded enough then it doesn’t give good product, in addition to that if the livestock is feeded enough then it needs water. He also pointed out that most farmers were used to take their livestock from meadow to home in order to provide water to animals.
The animals would waste the energy gained from eating to go and drink water and that would waste the feedings. So the animals would not bind meat nor produce enough milk. Now here we are watching a difference scenario which the animals in the farms will be fed and after that will be able to drink the water from the drillings. The farmers will also have increased animal revenue.
Mr Yılmaz emphasized that they have carried out this project in 6 different locations, one in Araban two in Yavuzeli, one in Nurdağı, one in Şahinbey and one in Islahiye. He expressed as well that Gaziantep Municipality will be continuing these kinds of projects where they are able to find water and noted further upon that not only small animals but also many birds, different types of animals and insects living in the wild will be benefiting from it.
